My face drains at his demand. “What are you talking about. Do you know him?”

“God, yes,” he affirms. “I fucking know him, Ana, and so does your father. I can’t tell him you’re with Lucian or there will be a war, and we’ve got enough problems to worry about right now. Just—”

There’s a light creaking of the floor just outside the bathroom door, and I jump, knowing Lucian is probably out there pacing around and looking for me right now. I can’t even process how Lucian would know Padgett or my father, so I dismiss it for now.

“I have to go, Padgett,” I say. “Will you just relax for now? Don’t tell Dad about any of this. I’ll be home tomorrow.”

He sighs begrudgingly. “Okay, I’ll keep it to myself for now, but tell me one thing, Ana. Does he know who you are?”

I swallow hard, the creaking steps coming closer to the door. “No, I never gave him my full name.”

“Good,” he sighs. “Don’t.”

I hang up, stuffing my phone back into my pocket and charging back toward the bedroom to put Lucian’s aggravation to rest. The door flies open, slamming against the wall as soon I reach for the handle. I gasp, my fingertips slamming against the hollow wooden door.

“Ouch, Luc—” my eyes trail up the tall, muscular man in all black, his face covered all the way up to his eyes, with only his lips exposed. My heart sinks. “Who—Who are you?”

The man pulls the hand forward that had been tucked behind his hip. I catch a glimpse of a black and chrome pistol secured in his palm. “I think the better question is who exactly are you?”

I shake my head. “I—I just—I’m the nanny.”

His dark brows knit. “I don’t think so. What kind of a nanny sneaks around her boss’s bedroom unless she’s something more? Something more . . .” His eyes trace my surface, his free hand coming to brush my cheek. “Scandalous.”

I back up, but he only charges after me, his thick, muscular arm wrapping around my throat, pinning my back to his chest. I gasp, so vastly overwhelmed by his strength. His legs are so long that my feet only graze the floor as he pulls me from the bathroom in this chokehold.

I wiggle and squirm, thrashing in his grip. “Stop—let me—me go.”

“Shh,” he whispers, carrying me toward the window where the glass lays shattered all over the floor. There’s a portion of roof outside the window acting as a landing, where I see the tools he used to shatter the glass.

“We’re just going for a little adventure, nanny. I wouldn’t worry about it.”

I scratch at his arm, his reflex loosening the arm around my throat enough for me to inhale deeply. I scream, the noise echoing off the walls while I furiously writhe against him.

He growls, turning so his back is to the window and I face the door, just in time for it to come flying off its hinges. I stand on
